What should you check before you set your out of office?

For many businesses, the summer holidays mean quieter offices, annual leave and buildings being left empty for longer than usual. While it's a welcome break for many, it's also a good time to make sure your premises are properly secured. A few simple checks before you lock up can help give you peace of mind while you're away.

Test Your Intruder Alarm System

Before the holiday period, make sure your intruder alarm is working as it should. If you've noticed any faults or warning messages recently, it's worth getting them looked at before the building is left unattended.

Check Your CCTV

If your premises are protected by CCTV, make sure the cameras are clean, recording correctly and covering the areas you need them to. There's little point having a camera if the footage isn't clear when you need it.

Review Your Access

If you use an access control system, check that only current employees have access to the building. If someone has recently left the business, make sure their access has been removed.

Secure Doors and Windows

It sounds obvious, but it's worth doing one final walk around the building before you leave. Check that all doors and windows are locked properly and that any valuable equipment isn't left on display.

Check Your Fire Alarm System

Even if your building is going to be empty, your fire alarm system still needs to be fully operational. If your next service is due, arranging it before the holidays can help avoid any unexpected issues while you're away.

Keep Emergency Contacts Up to Date

Make sure your key holder information is correct and that the right people can be contacted if your alarm is activated or there's an issue at the property.

Don't Forget the Basics

Simple things like using timer-controlled lighting, keeping the outside of the building tidy and making sure gates are locked can all help improve security while your premises are quieter than normal.
